Dyani's story
It was early morning and the first light of season slowly crept over the trees surrounding my village. I was the first to leave my hut and soon others would be trailing out of their homes, ready to gather crop as I was. However today I wanted to be the first, as it has been my practice for the past several years. Not that I was eager to work, but because I wanted to make sure no one would see me leaving.
While all the other gatherers from my tribe would be out harvesting the usual crops. I however I had my heart set on a bigger prize. For nothing in all our land tasted sweeter than fresh wild Luna berries and by this time they would be perfect for picking. The only problem was that they grew in a glade just outside our tribal borders.
We were always told growing up never to leave the safety of our borders, that dangerous beasts roamed the lands beyond our forest. Not that I’d ever take their words seriously, had my parents known that I had been secretly leaving our forest they’d surely tan my hide. However my sweet tooth for the Luna berries always got the better of my judgment. My mouth watered just thinking about those berries as I hurried through the forest. It would be almost noon by the time I reach the glade and would needed to hurry back before someone notices my absences.
As I approached the glade I could already smell the berries ripping in the distance. Quietly I made my way to them, following my nose to the sweet smell. I wasted no time filling my basket, stopping every other minute to enjoy the taste. I only wish that in that moment I had been paying more attention to how quiet it had gotten. Had I been more aware, I might have known there was a hunter stalking me.
