Forbidden Love
“Come in.” Dyani said as there came a knock on her door. She had learned well the tribes language since her initiation. It was an easy, straight-forward language. She wasn't surprised that Awenita stood in the door frame. The two does had become close friends over the past couple of months, not just because they were the only deer in the village and shared a similar fade, but because Dyani had always been such a kind and friendly person towards her.
“Oh hi, please come in.” Dyani gestured towards the floor of her hut. The soft fur rug offered a decent place to relax. She was just cooking a little evening meal, since she and Awenita both were herbivores, while most of the tribe members were predators, she preferred to cook for herself.
“You hungry?” Dyani asked as she turned back to her fireplace.
Awenita shook her head smiling: “Nah, I already had my dinner, but please, I didn't want to interrupt you.”
“Needs some time still, anyway.” Dyani shrugged, taking a calabash and two wooden bowls from a cupboard and sat down opposing Awenita: “But I'm sure you're thirsty.”
Awenita giggled and took one of the bowls. The tribe prepared some pretty good alcohols from the many fruits of the forest, and while they didn't drink on a regular basis, both Awenita and herself had gotten used to it.
“How are the kids?” Awenita asked.
“Oh, they are good, Wenona caught her first frog today, it was so cute seeing her all muddy but so proud.” Awenita laughed and Dyani smiled. “Skyler is taking care of them this evening.”
“He's a good man.” Awenita said with a smile.
“Indeed, though I can understand why you don't want to choose just one.” Dyani winked.
Awenita blushed underneath her fur and grinned, was it that obvious that she had so much fun? But then again, from time to time she envied the other deer for her family and as time passed, that feeling grew stronger.
“Well, you don't need a specific male to have a family here, right? The tribe all contributes to the care of the young, as do I.”
“I noticed how everyone does their part to help out and I think I’ve found mine.”
“Yes, I know that you go to the large hut almost every day now, taking care of the children, caring for them, feeding them and teaching them. You are very good at that.” Her face grew serious: “I know that you want a child, maybe not a family like I have, but a child of your own. Aren’t I right?”
Awenita gulped and looked down into the bowl for a moment: “Yes, you are right. You see, I love what I do with the males every night, but for a month now, I hoped that, well, something more would happen.
“But it doesn't.”
“No.” Awenita was almost looked like crying.
“Listen, I've talked to Koira and she thinks there might be a way to help you.”
“What way?” Awenita asked.
“Well, Koira is going to be taking a few of us into forest soon to perform a, special ritual. You should come with us.”
Awenita was about to voice her concerns, just before Dyani touched her fingers to lips “Trust me, you won’t regret it” she said, softly kissing her, Awenita smiled and nodded in approval.
...Two days later, shortly before dusk, the five females were walking through the forest. Koira, in her casual dressing, feathers in her long hair and a staff in her hand was leading the way. Dyani was holding an uncertain Awenita's hand, both of them were nude and well excepted of their status. Awenita continued to casually press Dyani for answers, but Dyani only smiled and said “you’ll see”. What didn't help in soothing Awenita was the group was flanked by two other girls of the tribe. Aleutia the weasel and Juno the fox, both wearing simple loincloth and both apparently excited that they were about to witness the ceremony.
